Why do I need to share my national ID or TIN?

Why Gigapay asks for your national ID, social security or tax identification number to verify your identity, how we protect it, and how to check the request is real.

It is reasonable to pause before typing a personal number into a website. Here is why we ask for it, what we do with it, and how to check the request is genuine.

The short version

  • The number we ask for is your national identity or tax identification number: the number your country uses to identify you as a person. In some countries this is a dedicated tax number; in others it is your national ID or social security number.

  • We need it to verify the identity of the person authorised to manage the account. It is used solely for identity verification.

  • We only ever ask for it inside the Gigapay app, never by email or chat.

Why we ask

Before we can send money to an account, we have to be certain who is behind it. Your national identity or tax identification number is how we confirm that the person managing the account is who they say they are. It is the same check a bank carries out when you open an account, and we cannot release a Payout to an account whose owner has not been verified.

If you are onboarding as an Individual, your personal number is all we need. You do not need a company or a business tax number. For the number that applies in your country, see Providing Your Tax Identification Number (TIN).

How we protect it

  • Used for one purpose. Your number is used solely to verify your identity. Gigapay is a Swedish company and handles your personal data under EU data protection law (GDPR).

  • Your Client cannot see it. They see what they need to pay you, such as your name and the Payout amount. Your number is not shared with them or with anyone else.

  • Only in the app. We ask for identity numbers, ID documents and bank details inside the app, in the secure fields built for them. If anyone asks you to send these by email, chat or message, do not. Log in and add them there instead.

Still unsure?

How can I check the request is real?

  1. Ask your Client to confirm they have created a Payout for you through Gigapay.

  2. Instead of clicking a link, open app.gigapay.com directly in your browser and log in there.

  3. If something still feels off, contact us before entering anything.

I entered the wrong number. Can I fix it?

Yes. Contact us via in-app chat or email support@gigapay.com and we will guide you to correct it in the app. Do not include the number itself in your message.
